By Aurora G. Toth, Revolving Books
A funny thing happened on my way back to the mystery section…I got sidetracked by, of all things, authors from Tacoma, Pierce County.
There are 12 people who live and write among us: Elna Baker, Earl Emerson, Eilis Flynn, Harriet A Hall, Philip Heldrich, Frank Herbert, Robin Hobb, Nathan Hendrick, Mark Lindquist, Jean-Paul Pecqueur, Choo Thomas, and Hans Zeiger.
The list isn’t completely accurate. Frank Herbert, author of the very popular DUNE series passed away several years ago. (His son, Brian Herbert, hiding out someplace in the state, is writing the current books, along with co-author Kevin Anderson.)
If you look a little further afield than Tacoma, Sequim is home to both Aaron Elkins and Charlotte Elkins. Tess Gallagher, Raymond Carver, and Ellie Mathews are all from Port Angeles.
Port Townsend is home to Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and the late Betty MacDonald (of THE EGG AND I fame).
Spokane is home to Sci-Fi writer C J Cherryh and novelist Ursula Hegi, along with mystery writer Jess Walter.
Of course, Seattle tops the list, with 45 local authors, including Sci-Fi writers Greg Bear, Octavia E. Butler, Terry Brooks, and Vonda N McIntyre, novelists William Dietrich, Ridley Pierson, and that East Coast transplant, Neil Stephenson. Western author Max Brand also calls Seattle home, along with non-fiction Seattle history writer Bill Spiedel.
J A Jance, Janice L. Smith, and Debbie Macomber, Glenn Beck, Tom Bodett, Kristin Hannah, Tom Robbins, David Eddings, Steve Martini, and travel writer Rick Steves hang out in unnamed parts of the state.
Who’d a thunk it??
Looks like I’ve got some reading to do so I’ll see you later.
