George O. Zander 91, born in New Rockford, ND on March 28, 1919 left his earthly home on Jan 26, 2011. He fought a two month battle with pneumonia related complications when he was called to Glory. Raised in the ND area, when old enough, as was typical of that period for boys too young to enter the military, George joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC’s) in 1936. He was stationed at various posts in the ND and MN area, and it was during that time that he met Stella Wold, from Thief River Falls, MN, whom he married in 1939. They began their life in ND, but soon relocated to Tacoma for employment, where they remained the rest of their married life. George first worked for NW Woodenware, and later for over 20 years at Lyle Plywood. In 1968 he was hired by the Tacoma School District as a custodian – first at the Central Admin Building and later at Rogers Elem School until his retirement in 1992 at age 73. He was active in his church throughout his life, utilizing his gardening talents to tend flowerbeds and beautifying the church grounds. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working in his yard, and was an avid reader, often devouring several newspapers a day. He loved music, and wrote poetry in his younger years, as well as two songs that were published, recorded, and played on local radio stations in the early 1950’s. He leaves behind a daughter, Peggy Biller Lundin (Charles ) of Fife, a brother, Lloyd Zander (June) of Fargo, ND, grandsons Clay (Amie) of Corsicana, Texas and Chris Biller of Bonney Lake, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his very special friend, Laura Brandt of Puyallup. George was preceded in death by his wife Stella of 64 years, a daughter, June Marilyn who died shortly after birth, and parents Otto and Clara Zander of Tacoma. Graveside services will be on Friday, Feb. 4, at Mt. View Memorial Park at 11:30AM. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 416 S. 56th St., Tacoma, on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1PM, Pastor Daniel Gerken officiating. The family suggests donations be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Memorial Garden Fund. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home 253-584-0252. Please sign the online guestbook at www.mountainviewtacoma.com.
