From the Mayor’s Desk: On behalf of Town Council, staff, and myself let me wish all Steilacoom residents a very happy Holiday season and a prosperous New Year. Please be safe and enjoy the time with family and friends.
Santa once again was active in Steilacoom. He arrived on our sleigh 4 December led by police lights and sirens plus a fire truck. At Town Hall, coordinated by PSO Larry Whelan, the Steilacoom High School choir provided entertainment, and Santa and Mrs. Claus were available for pictures after reading a Christmas story to a very large group of children. Thank you to the Town staff, Public Safety volunteers, Kiwanis, the Chamber, the Girl Scouts, and the Steilacoom School District and others for the continued support.
On 17 December, Santa and Mrs. Claus rolled through Town with a public safety escort and many elves and reindeer to greet residents and especially children with new toys and candy canes. PSO Whelan again coordinated the visit with Terry Huber driving the sleigh. Countless children volunteered to help Santa make the night a success. Thanks to the parents that allowed the children to continue this Steilacoom tradition of “Santa Around Town.” A special thank you to “The Posh Paw” at 8415 Steilacoom Blvd. for donating the animal treats distributed throughout the evening.
On 19 December, the annual Steilacoom Sing and Play Along filled Town Hall with talented musicians and willing singers. Coordinated by Nancy Henderson and supported by dozens, this event once again brought residents and families together in song for a truly wonderful evening….we will do it again next year!
Complements to the Public Works staff for executing the established winter road plan and applying brine to the roads prior to the freeze which ensured our main roads and hills were prepared for the cold spell and then plowing and sanding once the snow started.
Ron Lucas, Mayor

The Annual Steilacoom Christmas Treecycling Drop-Off Weekend
The annual Christmas Treecycling Drop-Off will be held on the weekend of January 8th & 9th, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day at the Public Works (1030 Roe Street) utility yard. The annual event serves as a primary community recycling event and fund-raiser for Steilacoom Boy Scout Troop #71. A suggested minimum donation of $3.00 per tree will be collected in support of the Scouts.
We can only accept Christmas trees that have been cleaned of all decorations including lights, tinsel, garland, nailed-on bases, etc. Sorry, no flocked trees, wreathes or other vegetation accepted at this event. Scouts will pick up and recycle cleaned trees from Steilacoom residents for an extra $3 per tree ($6 total). Please call 318-1917 for information and pickup reservations.
Residents who subscribe to the curbside yardwaste recycling may cut up their cleaned trees and place them inside their yardwaste cart for pickup on their regularly scheduled day.
Recycling your tree through our annual event supports both our community conservation efforts and the Scouts from Steilacoom Troop #71. Hope to see you on the weekend of January 8th & 9th. Thank You and Happy Holidays!
