1st Annual Shop with an Officer

December 17, 2010 By Ben Sclair

The Lakewood Officers’ Charity, in partnership with the Lakewood Walmart, is coordinating their 1st Annual “Shop with an Officer” program. The Charity partnered with local school counselors to identify prospective children to participate in the program. This year, twelve children will be picked up at home by a Lakewood Police Officer in their police car and driven to the Lakewood Walmart. There, the child and Officer will shop for gifts for the child’s entire family. Walmart employees will wrap the gifts for the child while they wait. All children in the selected families will enjoy refreshments, be given a Holiday gift bag, and a chance to meet Santa. Forty six total children, and their parents, will benefit from the program this year. This program is being made possible by a generous grant from the Lakewood Officers’ Charity and the Walmart Corporation.

Some of the families being supported by this program this year:

  • A family of 6 whose mother was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer
  • A family of 8 who recently lost their father
  • A family of 6 whose father was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer

The Officers’ Charity is also coordinating our Holiday Meal and Old Country Christmas events with local businesses to distribute toys, gifts, and food to struggling families. All told, Lakewood Police Officers, through their Lakewood Officers’ Charity, are helping support almost 200 families this Holiday Season.

Anyone interested in more information about our charity or wishing to donate towards any of our charitable events, can do so on Facebook or our website.
