LAKEWOOD -– On December 7, 2010, the Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that will place a measure on the February 8, 2011 ballot, asking Lakewood voters to merge the Lakewood Fire Department and the University Place Fire Department. If this ballot measure is approved by a majority of the voters, the two fire districts will merge and will be known as ‘West Pierce Fire & Rescue’. Merging these two fire departments follows a 20-year trend in Pierce County, as many other fire departments have merged over that period, creating regional fire service providers.
Currently, the Lakewood Fire Department and University Place Fire Department work together in every aspect of their day-to-day operations and according to Lakewood Fire Chief Ken Sharp, “This merger will only serve to enhance an already positive working relationship. This election is a culmination of a two-year process and we’re excited and looking forward to the efficiencies this merger will bring to both communities.”
