Lakewood, Wash. – This evening, four firefighters were recognized for their compassion and dedication to helping others; a Medal of Merit for their deployment to Haiti in August to assist with medical care.
The four firefighters, which included Matt Wagner, Dan Bronoske, David Emmons and Travis Smith, spent 11 days in Haiti treating patients at an emergency room clinic out of a former amusement park in Port-au-Prince. This volunteer mission was organized by Disaster Response Northwest, a nonprofit organization created by six paramedics from Pierce, Grays Harbor and Kitsap Counties.
In addition, two firefighters from University Place Fire Department were also recognized and awarded Medals of Merit for their recent (and multiple) deployments to Haiti and Guatemala.
The Medal of Merit symbolizes their commitment to helping others, not only in the community in which they serve, but to those truly in need. Their time away from work was covered by other firefighters donating vacation time and covering their shifts.
Lakewood Fire District 2 is very proud of their service, selflessness and dedication. These medals are well deserved.
