U.P. Library prepares for move

November 29, 2010 By Pierce County Library System

By Mary Getchell, Communications Director, Pierce County Library System

The University Place Pierce County Library will open at the Civic and Library Building, 3609 Market Place W., on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at 12 p.m.

“We hear daily from University Place residents who are very excited about the new, larger, more up-to-date library,” said Neel Parikh, executive director for Pierce County Library System. “Pierce County Library is thrilled to open the doors at the new location and deliver the services in a space people have been yearning for!”

The library will ready for the move in four phases with limited services and slightly reduced hours.

  • Monday, Dec. 13-Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, 12-6 p.m., people may pick up items they have on hold, use computers, and browse and check out popular books, movies and music. During this time shelves and the majority of books and other materials will be boxed and moved.
  • Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010-Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, people may continue to pick up items on hold, use computers, and browse and check out from a greater selection of books, movies and music. In addition, the library will offer children’s story times, teen activities and a book club for adults. The University Place Library will be open as follows during these six weeks: Sunday: 1-5 p.m.; Monday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday: 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Monday, Jan. 31-Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, people may continue to pick up items they have placed on hold as well as browse and check out items from a smaller selection of books, movies and music. The UP Library will be open as follows during these seven days: Sunday: 1-5 p.m.; Monday-Tuesday: 2-6 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Friday: 2-6 p.m.; Saturday: 1-5 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 7-Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, the library will be closed at the current location at 27th St. W. for final preparations for the grand opening of the new University Place Library at the Civic and Library Building, on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at 12 p.m. Story times will continue during this time.

Since 2007, Pierce County Library has talked with people in the community about their ideas for services and designs in the new space. People will see many of their comments reflected in the new library.

The new 15,000 square foot library—3,000 square feet larger than the old library—will feature contemporary offerings. From 80,000 books, movies and audiobooks to check out and a cyberbar for teens to interactive and educational computers for children and a dedicated Job and Business Center to help adults find jobs or start businesses, the new University Place Library will serve the full community.
