The Lakewood Playhouse has once more galvanized local merchants into providing an enjoyable evening of theatre mixed with pre-Christmas treats to a group of families with little chance of availing themselves of a theatrical experience.
Marcus Walker, Managing Artistic Director of the Lakewood Playhouse, asked Lynn Geyer if she would again coordinate the theatre’s “Christmas Stocking” event which has been so successful the past eight years; she willingly agreed.
Walker was pleased that Geyer invited 15 families to attend the theatre’s “preview” night dress rehearsal (held November 24) for which the Playhouse provided free tickets for the holiday show, Best Christmas Pageant Ever. He also agreed to furnish the family members with free intermission treats.
“I really look forward to this annual event for Lakewood Playhouse. This is a happy time for all of us at the theatre,“ Walker said. The Christmas Stocking event has a special meaning for Walker, who is currently battling a rare form of cancer.
Geyer contacted Jim Pfeifer, the principal at Idlewild Elementary for help. Pfeifer put Geyer in touch with school counselor Dan Luce who selected 15 Idlewild students and their families.
The next step was finding donations from local merchants to fill the Christmas stockings each family was given at the November 24 performance.
“We had an overwhelming response to our requests the past eight years,” said Geyer. “Considering the state of the economy, this year was just as remarkable. We asked for products or gift certificate from each merchant to include in the stockings and goodie bags. The list of donors is astounding: A & A Meats, Albertson’s, Applebee’s, Arby’s, Blackbear Yogurt, Casa Mia, Cascade Bagel, Churches Chicken, Denney’s, Domino’s, Garlic Jim’s, The Goodwill, The Green Coconut Tree, Happy Teriyaki, The House of Donuts, Hunan Garden, I Hop, Jack-in-the Box, Kentucky Fried Chicken, KOTO Teriyaki, La Palma, Little Caesar’s, Long Beach Café, McDonald’s, Moonrise Café, Old Country Buffet, Panera Bread, Papa John’s, The Ram, Rite Aid, Saar’s Market Place, Safeway, Subway—Lakewood, Subway—Steilacoom Blvd., Taco Del Mar, Target, Tijuana Taco, Trop’s Chocolates and Walgreen’s.”
Geyer finalized the coordination by printing theatre and treat tickets to go with the vouchers for the Christmas stockings and goodie bags. These she put together with a welcome letter of explanation to give to Luce who disseminated them through the children of the selected families.
A community effort guaranteed to give 15 families a chance to have a truly memorable Pre-Christmas experience.
