The Pierce County Library System’s Board of Trustees welcomes Linda Ishem, as its new Board of Trustee, to help guide the future of library service.
“Linda’s professional and personal background will bring the board strong community and economic development experience,” said Neel Parikh, executive director of the Library System. “Her experience in government, and now as a college professor broadens our already strong, diverse Board of Trustees.”
Ishem, a University Place resident, is currently an assistant professor with the University of Washington Tacoma’s Urban Studies Program. Before working for the university, she held posts with Pierce County’s Department of Community Services, as the director, and prior to that as a manager and an acting assistant director with the Washington State Department of Community Development.
Ishem actively participates with community organizations and recently served on The Non-Profit Center and Northwest African American Museum. Since 2006 she has advised students in their community service work with nonprofit organizations.
“I have a strong tie and connection to public libraries, dating back to growing up in public housing in Boston. The Boston Public Library exposed me to a broader world of discovery, information and entertainment,” said Ishem. “For the past 21 years, as a Pierce County resident, I’ve been an active customer and supporter of the Pierce County Library.”
Ishem will be part of a five-member board with policy and fiscal responsibility to provide library services and programs to the 554,000 people in the Library System’s service area. Board responsibilities include:
* Setting Library System goals and objectives.
* Approving annual budgets.
* Adopting policies.
* Studying community needs and interests and ensuring the Library is meeting them.
* Advocating for the Library.
The Library System is not a part of Pierce County government. By state law, Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy appointed Ishem and the Pierce County Council ratified the appointment.
Other Library Board of Trustees include J.J. McCament, chair; Budd Wagner, vice chair; Steve Albers; and Allen Rose. Trustees are non-paid positions.
