Rich Berndt of Industrial Rehabilitation Consultants (IRC) will assume the chair of the City of University Place Economic Development Commission in January. Rich has been a member of the EDC since February 2009 and brings to the chairmanship a background in the areas of banking, insurance, finance and business development.
Berndt and his wife, Barbara, have owned IRC, a professional vocational retraining and assessment service provider on Sylvan Drive West for 27 years. As EDC chair, he wants to continue to help the City Council examine various issues related to economic development, whether they involve the business licensing transition that is underway or growth management concerns. “We are an advisory board and a tool the City Council can use when they need more facts and information about a specific topic,” he says. “We don’t start the engine. We simply help tune it up.”
The group will be busy in 2011 as the City continues to market the development of Town Center and prepares for the economic opportunities – and challenges – presented by the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in 2015.
The Economic Development Commission meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 a.m. in the Town Center Gallery at City Hall. The Commission still has one vacant position and the deadline for applications has been extended to Dec. 20. For more information, please visit the City’s website at www.cityofup.com.
