DuPont’s Sequalitchew Creek committee to meet, Nov. 4

November 3, 2010 By Ben Sclair

The City of DuPont’s Sequalitchew Creek/Edmond Marsh Committee will hold its first meeting on Thursday, November 4 at 6 pm in DuPont City Council Chambers.

Purpose: Human activity in and around Sequalitchew Creek and Edmond Marsh may impact the environmental health and sustainability ecosystems of the creek and the marsh. In order to further explore the City’s current policy and regulatory roles relative to the protection of the environment, the Mayor has established a committee to:

(1) Assemble and examine known and available information regarding the environmental condition of the Sequalitchew Creek and Edmond Marsh;

(2) Identify and examine relevant and applicable regulatory authority over land development practices and uses within and near the creek and marsh;

(3) Provide a report to the Mayor describing the available information and regulatory authority; and

(4) Make suggestions to the Mayor regarding how the City might utilize the information in the report to develop policies regarding the scope and need for protection of the ecosystems of the Sequalitchew Creek and Edmond Marsh. Potential suggestions made by the committee could include revisions to the comprehensive plan, development regulations, city code and or exiting policies. Understanding that there is legislative process to follow, an additional benefit is that the suggestions could possibly dove tail into the Shoreline Restoration Plan.
