Effective Dec.13, 2010, the City of University Place will partner with the Department of Licensing’s Master License Service (MLS) to process new and renewed business licenses.
The City Council decided in August to transfer business licensing to the state’s MLS, which can process both state and local licenses, so the City can make better use of its limited staff. To lessen the impact on local businesses, however, the City will absorb the $9 processing fee. The cost of business licenses remains the same: $50 per calendar year, or $25 per calendar year for Home Occupation Businesses.
All University Place businesses will receive a letter in November explaining how the new system works and its benefits, which include:
- A convenient and time-saving online renewal system for state and local licenses.
- Six-week notice for renewals with easy online options for credit card payment. Hard copy renewal via mail is also available.
- The first MLS renewal may be pro-rated for less than a year so that existing city license expiration dates can be matched to the expiration dates MLS already has for businesses in their system.
The City’s Economic Development staff will closely monitor and evaluate this transfer of licensing during the next year both in terms of customer service and finances.
