I received a desperate mailer attacking Paul Wagemann, stating he has extreme positions on guns. I have known Paul for 17 years, attending the same church, and enjoying many hunting and camping trips together. We are close friends—I know him very well. I want to set the record straight.
He supports the second constitutional amendment, gun safety and especially the safety of our children. Paul supports the current federal and state laws requiring persons engaged in the business of selling firearms to be licensed as a dealer. Gun dealers, by law, are subject to a thorough background check.
Paul believes that citizens, given the privilege of a concealed handgun permit by the State, should be allowed to carry the handgun without additional restrictions. It is generally not those persons who are a violent threat in our communities.
Paul supports parents being held responsible for the security of their weapons. What he opposes is more legislation regarding parent’s accountability in gun accidents involving their children. Current parent negligence laws are sufficient to hold parents accountable—they just need to be enforced.
Go to Paul’s website— review the NRA’s legislative candidate questionnaire where his views on the issue are clearly stated.
