Panel seeks public input on parks district idea

October 25, 2010 By Ben Sclair

A news release from Pierce County Parks and Recreation

A citizen panel that advises the Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department will conduct two public meetings to evaluate the potential formation of a metropolitan park district in unincorporated Pierce County. A new park district would provide tax-based funding for park and recreation services for residents not currently in a metropolitan park district.

The nine-member Citizens’ Advisory Board advises the Parks and Recreation Department concerning its general operations, capital projects and citizen interests. The board is evaluating desirability, geographic boundaries, Parks funding and which county parks and trail systems could be transferred to a park district.

Citizen participation is encouraged to aid in the board’s efforts. The public meeting dates are:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 27, 5:30 p.m. Sprinker Recreation Center, 14824 C St. S., Tacoma, WA 98444
  • Thursday, Nov. 4, 5:30 p.m. Meridian Habitat Park and Community Center, 14422 Meridian E., South Hill, WA 98374

Following the public meetings, the board will develop a recommendation to send to the County Council. For more information, please contact Pierce County Parks and Recreation at 253-798-4177.
