Letter: Let us help ‘set the record straight’

October 24, 2010 By Ben Sclair

By Scott and Mandy Candler, Lakewood

We have received word of a desperate mailer, intended to smear Paul Wagemann, by insinuating that he exhibited financial mismanagement in the development of The Commencement project in Ruston. We would like to set the record straight; Paul is acting responsibly and diligently to ensure that all sub-contractors and suppliers are paid. Despite today’s catastrophic climate in the construction and commercial-banking industries, Paul Wagemann is determined to complete this project.

Those of us who work in the construction industry know all too well the devastation caused by the commercial-lending crisis and poor economic conditions. Federal dollars are not getting out of banks for construction loans, causing foreclosures, liens and bankruptcy. Paul Wagemann’s experience and leadership in handling commerce in this tough recession makes him more qualified than ever to stand strong in the State House as our Representative.

What exactly, has Ms. Green done in her years in Olympia to assist the small businessperson or the construction industry? Her record for the last year alone shows her to be a strong deterrent to any favorable business climate, including her votes to add new taxes (SB 6143 and 6130). Paul Wagemann’s proven record of service, leadership, and accountability has prepared him to represent our needs in Olympia.

Okay, the construction industry is important. But is it the only thing that is important for a 150 Washington State legislators to consider? Come on, Scott and Mandy: Tammy Green does not hold herself out as an authority on the construction industry. In fact, as a nurse, Representative Green is an authority on health care. She has done impressive work in the Legislature on health and education issues. It is no accident that Tammy Green is part of the Democratic leadership in the legislature. She earned the post with talent and results.

On the other hand, I read that Paul Wagemann has a “proven record of service leadership and accountability, I’ll be darned if I can find specifics of that record. What I find is a possibly well-meaning person with limited life experience and, at best, a weak formal education, and bad judgment in money matters. Maybe that is unfair, but that is the information his campaign offers voters like me.

So fear not, no one is likely to smear your candidate, Mr. Wagemann, more significantly than his own campaign.
