More than 30 area residents attended a Lakewood Historical Society program on early area newspapers. Nancy Covert, a Steilacoom resident, historian and longtime journalist, discussed the numerous newspapers that were published in Steilacoom, DuPont and Lakewood starting in the 1850's. The March program is slated for March 23, also at the Lakewood Library. The speaker will be Bart Smith who has hiked all of the 11 National Scenic Trails. He has spent 17 years covering 16,500 miles. In addition to talking about the trails, Smith will show photos from his vast file taken during his years of hiking.
Nancy Covert sits behind an early typewriter as she shows the crowd attending her presentation of early day area newspapers how newspaper reporters prepared their stories until computers took over. She spoke at the Lakewood Library as part of the Lakewood Historical Society's monthly history programs. Monthly programs are open to the public and are free.
