Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. – The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord Soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Sgt. Adam J. Ray, 23, of Louisville, Ky., died Feb. 9 in southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
According to unit records, Ray enlisted in the Army on April 3, 2005 at Jackson, Mississippi. He attended basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., and completed advanced individual training as a Patient Administration Specialist at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In January, 2006, he reported to Camp Casey, Korea, where he completed a 12-month tour of duty. He was assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis, Wash. (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) in February, 2007. In April, 2008, he was assigned to 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, completing the Military Occupational Specialty 11B: Infantryman qualification course at Fort Benning before returning to the unit in October, 2008 as a rifleman. The brigade deployed to Afghanistan in July, 2009, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This was his first combat deployment.
Ray’s civilian and military education includes a high school diploma (2005), Military Occupational Specialty 91G (now 68G) “Patient Administration Specialist” Qualification Course (2006), Military Occupational Specialty 11B: Infantryman Qualification Course (2008), and Combat Lifesavers Course (2008).
His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal- Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge. He was posthumously promoted to his present rank from his previously-held rank of Specialist.
