This monument, situated in what today is known as Thunderbird Shopping Center on Steilacoom Boulevard in Lakewood, is positioned on a small strip of grass just north of the Dollar Store and west of Key Bank. It reads: "Leschi Chief of the Nisqualies - martyr to the vengence of the unforgiving white man - was hanged 300 yards SE from here Feb. 10, 1858. Erected 1963 by Pierce County Pioneer and Historical Assn." The Lakewood Historical Society published this photo and two others in its winter newsletter and plans to publish additional marker photos in the future. The Suburban Times will be reproducing some of the historical marker photos in coming issues. If you are aware of a historical marker or monument or another historical event in the area that should be recognized, please contact the historical society in Lakewood, Steilacoom or DuPont.
