Applications for free house-painting are now available for low-income seniors and low-income people with disabilities throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. Volunteers from Paint Tacoma-Pierce Beautiful do all the work. A program of Associated Ministries, this will be the 26th year for volunteer crews to be matched with homeowners. There is no cost to the homeowner, since the painters are volunteers, and the paint is purchased with donated funds.
The deadline for applications is April 15, so now is the time to apply. To be eligible, applicants must: (1) be a senior (60+) OR have a disability AND be receiving disability income, (2) own their own home in Tacoma/Pierce County, and (3) be low-income. People may apply for themselves or request an application in order to help someone fill it out.
The volunteers paint only the exterior of the house. Homes may be anywhere in Pierce County, ranging from Buckley to Gig Harbor, from the north end of Tacoma to Lakewood and all the way out to Elbe and Ashford. Volunteers do all the work, coming from churches, service clubs, businesses, unions, local government offices, schools, military bases, etc.
Since the program began in 1985, volunteers have painted 1,902 homes. Last summer, more than 1,600 people volunteered with this effort and painted 82 homes. Homeowners are thrilled, as witnessed by these thank-you’s from three of last year’s happy recipients.
The program was life changing for me. I had been sick and depressed for a long time with various health problems and everything was a total mess. Most of it hadn’t been painted for close to 30 years, and the siding was starting to crumble. These people from Harbor Life Church were so positive. . .They were a joy to have around and really lifted my spirits. . . It is beautiful now – I never could have managed this alone. — Beverly B. My garage and house looked so depressing to me. One day I got this blue card and I filled it out not even really knowing that my house would be picked to be painted. I was so very surprised! I am still in shock that all those lovely people painted my house!!! Gay Wiley
