The Humane Society and Coalition: HUMAnE are partnering to offer free cat spay/neuter on Saturday, February 13 and Saturday, February 20. The surgeries are available to low-income Pierce County residents by appointment, and will take place at Coalition: HUMAnE Spay Neuter Clinic in Tacoma. Interested cat owners can call 253-383-2733, extension 5811 for more information.
For some reason, cats are coming into heat unusually early this year, and this has both organizations concerned. Starting in early January, an alarmingly high number of pregnant cats have entered the Humane Society, or were found to be pregnant when spayed.
Typically, cats become pregnant in March or April and kittens begin flooding the shelter in late spring. The signs that an unusually early “kitten season” is imminent has shelter and clinic staff desperate to alter as many cats as possible this month.
Cat owners are urged to have their pet spayed or neutered before the end of February. In addition to the free “Caturdays”, both the Humane Society and Coalition: HUMAnE has ongoing low-cost spay/neuter programs to assist pet owners.
