Exploration of Puget Sound by US Navy Lt. Charles Wilkes and other earlier explorers was examined Tuesday evening by Dick Blumenthal of Bellevue during the January meeting of the Lakewood Historical Society. A crowd of more than 50 turned out at the Lakewood Library to hear about the exploration expeditions. Blumenthal has written a trio of books about the explorations of the area with the latest one covering the exploits of Lt. Wilkes.
In February Nancy Covert of Steilacoom will present a program on newspapers of the area including the Lakewood Log and the Suburban Times. That program will also take place at the Lakewood Library on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The programs are open to the public and are free.
