Obituary Notice

December 22, 2009 By Ben Sclair

BeckerShirleyShirley Ann Becker After a hard-fought battle with multiple myeloma cancer, Shirley Becker received her wings and went to live with our Lord on Dec. 19, 2009. Shirley was born September 19, 1929, in Yelm, WA, the third of nine children to John and Leoncie Solomon. In 1947 she married Don Becker, on the sweetest day of the year: Valentine’s Day. Together they had 10 children: Anna Peterson (Brian), Donald Becker Jr (Rose), Theresa Goatz (Tony), Richard Becker (Patti), Rose Collins (Jim), Rebecca Denton (Terry), Julia Livernash (Kirk), Barbara Bowen (Bret), John Becker (LeAnne), and Stephen Becker (Teresa). Shirley was a highly talented person. She was an active member of Camp Fire Girls; teaching and sharing her artistic talent. She enjoyed scrapbooking, card-making, sewing, and making stunning porcelain dolls. Each grandchild was able to choose from one of the 200 in her collection. She also spent countless hours creating handmade quilts for every grandchild. She blended her love of craft with another important interest: volunteering. She started “Prayer Shawls”–a group of ladies who knitted shawls for individuals experiencing illness or undergoing surgery. She started a church library, was a bible study leader, Eucharistic Minister; regularly fed the homeless, made meals for Habitat for Humanity, and she and Don even opened their home for ten years to foster children. Shirley and Don were married for 62 years. In that time they enjoyed camping, trips to the ocean, visiting their kids and grandkids, and last year took a cruise to Alaska. She also had a bit of a daredevil streak in her: She celebrated her 65th birthday by skydiving. She is greatly missed and survived by her husband Don, her 10 children, 30 grandchildren, 17 great-grand children, 6 step grandchildren, 5 sisters, 2 brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews. The public viewing is at Mt. View Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 23 from noon to 9:00 P.M. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Disciples Catholic Church on Thursday, December 24, at 10:00 a.m. The family would like to thank the attentive, compassionate oncology ward at Good Samaritan Hospital and the caring staff at Rainier Physicians.
