I sincerely hope your 2009 holidays were very enjoyable and filled with family, friends, and happy memories. We thank the Ft. Lewis leadership and especially the 42nd MP BDE for providing the beautiful Christmas tree at Town Hall. The Town tree lighting and “Santa Around Town” were sensational events coordinated mainly by the Town staff, Chamber of Commerce, and the Steilacoom Officers Association & PSO Larry Whelan. Thanks to all.
Resident Nancy Henderson resurrected and revised a tradition for Steilacoom for a “Community Christmas Play and Sing Along” with volunteer musicians and singers enjoying a wonderful evening at Town Hall. With the success and great turnout…next year will be even better!! Thanks to Nancy and all the music makers.
I want you to know that our Public Safety Department’s officers suffered greatly with the murder of four Lakewood police officers. We train regularly with Lakewood officers. We respond to calls routinely with Lakewood. Our staff serves on Metro SWAT and other regional law enforcement teams with those fallen officers….they were not just names. You should know that our staff stood strong and supported Lakewood police in any way when asked but especially by filling in on Lakewood shifts with other local police agencies. Chief Drozynski led ten officers + two volunteers and their family members to the memorial at the Tacoma Dome. I was honored to join with our Department for the solemn memorial. Our professional officers deserve all our respect and support as they work to keep Steilacoom protected and a safe community to live and raise families. I am confident our officers have your complete support…they have mine!
I also want to pay a special thank you to the Public Safety Firefighter Volunteers who also stepped forward and covered additional shifts in support of the PSO’s and the Town.
You have likely seen the new flag pole in front of Town Hall. The purpose for the change was to ensure we fly the flag every day. The annual Christmas tree will remain at the normal location but now the flag pole will not be removed for seven weeks during the holiday season. Thank you to Dale Calkins, the Town’s mechanic, for fabricating the new pole.
Complements to the Public Works staff for executing the established winter road plan and applying brine to the roads prior to the freeze which ensured our main roads and hills were prepared for the cold spell.
Welcome Lowell Bier and Steve Stovall to the Town Council. The Council will hit the ground running in 2010 and we invite your comments on policy issues including: reviewing and setting all utility rate levels (1st quarter); 2010 construction projects (1st quarter); finalizing information for a decision on the purchase of the BPA substation (2nd quarter); planning and approving the 2011/12 budget (3rd quarter and 4th quarter).
The Steilacoom Historical School District #1 is asking residents to approve and continue a Levy request in Feb 2010. I ask you to read the levy material and to vote.
For the Council, staff, and myself…we wish you all the very best for 2010.
Ron Lucas, Mayor
