Lakewood Knights Lions and Lakewood Kiwanis Clubs Support Annual 1st & Goal Event

November 8, 2009 By Ben Sclair

By Dave O’Keeffe

1st & Goal is a program run by Communities In Schools that encourages 5th Grade students to set goals to improve their academic performance. Students who meet their school goals will board busses on December 7 for a unique field trip to Qwest Field. Upon arrival they get to walk around the field, play on Touchdown City inflatables, have lunch, meet Seahawks and Seagals, and listen to a motivational talk from a Seahawks player.

“Less than 5% of students develop goals for the school year”, said Mike Flood, Seahawks Vice President, “yet we know this skill is critical to success in academics, careers and life. The 1st & Goal program provides a structure where students not only learn to develop goals, they get to work on them and see the results.”

This year 150 students from Hillside, Evergreen and Lake Louise will participate in the event. Bussing and lunch costs will be covered by a $300 contribution from Knights Lions and $400 contribution from the Kiwanis Club. Communities In Schools board members helped raise funds when they assisted the Kiwanis Club at the concession stand last Friday night during the Lakes vs. Clover Park football game.
