Price, Reames elected to LHS board

October 20, 2009 By Ben Sclair

Longtime Lakewood residents Pat Price and Dave Reames were elected to the board of directors of the Lakewood Historical Society during the
organization’s recent annual meeting, according to president Becky Huber. Glen Spieth was re-elected vice president for another term.

In addition to the election, Society members heard a recap of the year’s activities from the president, reports on the organization’s marketing efforts and the status of planning for the permanent museum in the Mueller-Harkins Hangar at Clover Park Technical College.

A highlight of the annual meeting was a preview showing of a film, “Preserving our Heritage.” It was produced by the City of Lakewood’s Heritage Advisory Board.

Spieth reported that BCRA Design, a Tacoma-based architectural and planning company, is expected to complete its study of the hangar building in the next few weeks. It is anticipated the report will explain the needs for remodeling and upgrading to make the facility work as a museum and what that will cost.

Huber told the assembled Society members that monthly programs had attracted increased attendance over the previous year and visits to the museum in the Lakewood Colonial Center had also shown growth.

The next monthly program will be Nov. 19 at the Lakewood Library and will be a “History of the Tacoma Speedway.” It was located at what today is Clover Park Technical College. Dr. Wayne Herstad, an expert on the speedway, will show photos from his private collection as he discusses the history.

A holiday open house will come on Dec. 12 from 2-4 pm, at the museum. It is open to the public and visitors are encouraged to bring non-perishable food for a local food bank.
