Tyee Park Elementary to honor Veterans in annual celebration

October 13, 2009 By Ben Sclair

LAKEWOOD—On Thursday, Nov. 5, Tyee Park Elementary School students and staff will honor an unforgettable generation of American heroes at their annual Veterans Day celebration.

The program is scheduled from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and features a keynote address from Tuskegee Airman Col. Bill Holloman, who will recognize the military audience and speak about his incredible journey “From the Inside Out.” Fort Lewis’ Brig. Gen. Jeff Mathis will speak to students about “character” and the Navy Northwest Big Band will perform. Tyee Park students will also honor veterans through song.

“This show is Tyee Park’s way of thanking our military, both active and retired, for serving our country,” said fine arts teacher Tracey Lundquist. “Many of our veterans do not consider themselves heroes, but in our eyes, they are America’s treasures. We want to honor those individuals who work to preserve our freedom.”

Honored guests include Pearl Harbor Survivors, Tuskegee Airmen, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Halls, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients and city, state and national dignitaries.

Tyee Park Elementary is located at 11920 Seminole Road SW in Lakewood. For more information about Tyee Park’s Veterans Day celebration, contact Lundquist at 253-583-5380.
