Millions of dollars expected to stimulate our local economy are coming to people through expanded federal tax credits for low and moderate income workers. Thousands of additional dollars may come directly to working families who file for these credits. Many will not even know they are eligible. This tax season, more than ever, the Pierce County Asset Building Coalition needs volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. We are recruiting now for training in Dec and Jan. Volunteers serve from mid-Jan to April 15. By volunteering once per week during the 2010 tax season you can literally put money directly into the pockets of low-to-moderate-income working families in Pierce County. Multi-lingual speakers and residents from Lakewood are especially needed. All volunteers receive training in tax law, learn to use tax preparation software, and will be tested and certified by the IRS. We don’t necessarily need professional CPAs–the best volunteers are people who are sensitive to family issues about income and dependent status and who are able to communicate well with lots of different kinds of people. You will not be required to memorize tax law but you will have all the resources you need to be competent in properly preparing returns. Complete information about this opportunity and an application to volunteer can be found at www.piercecountyabc.org.
