Clover Park senior Yvonna Peterson and Lakes senior Chelsea Brown also received $1,000 college scholarships from Comcast. Lakes senior Cameron Boyd, who also received a $1,000 college scholarship from Comcast, was the student speaker for the event and shared the stage with keynote speaker Michelle Paige Paterson, first lady of New York.

Bobbie Richardson, a guidance counselor at Lakes, earned a Drum Major Recognition Award for her efforts in implementing the Elizabeth Wesley Incentive Award Program at Lakes.

The Elizabeth Wesley Youth Merit Incentive Award Program, established in 1996, recognizes and honors African-American youth in Tacoma-Pierce County for their academic achievement.
