Three years ago, Communities in Schools successfully lobbied for a permanent CIS stage at the Puyallup Fair to showcase the talents of children and youth in our local schools. Dave O’Keeffe, Director of CISL, points out that “performing builds competence, and competence leads to confidence. When children are confident in themselves, they perform better in school, and strive for greater achievement. The CIS stage will be testing ground for student talent for years to come.”
This year we featured the following Lakewood area performances: CIS After-school kids from Hillside performed a Hula, CPHS Cheer and Stunt team, PAYO Filipino Dancers, Show Biz Kids, YFC Gospel Rap, Steilacoom Jazz Ensemble, Charisma School of Dance, Lakewood Teen Idols, Mann Middle School Band, Lakes Cheer Squad and Dance Team, Lakewood Playhouse Youth Theatre Troupe, St. Frances Cabrini Spanish Dancers, Keila Pritchard Fire Dancing, Rachel Goodlet and Jazmine Parker.
Over the course of the Fair, there were 129 shows featuring just over 1,200 student performers from 14 different school districts and 6 different CIS affiliates. An estimated 24,000 people in the audience learned about CIS and enjoyed the performances. The final touch was giving a book, compliments of Reading Tree, to the children in the audience.Print This Post
