FORT LEWIS, Wash. – The 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade will case its colors Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at 10 a.m., at Watkins Field in preparation for the unit’s upcoming deployment to Iraq. About 1000 Soldiers from the brigade will in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom this fall.
The 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade was activated in October, 2008, as the third brigade of its kind in the U.S. Army. The brigade will provide Multi-National Corps- Iraq and coalition units with an array of intelligence and surveillance capabilities- including expertise in human and signals intelligence, counterintelligence, Arabic linguists, and long-range surveillance.
Upon arrival in Iraq, one of the brigade’s first missions will be to partner with Iraqi Security Forces as they prepare to protect Iraqi citizens participating in the next Iraqi national election, scheduled for January 2010.
