Chambers Bay ranks high

September 16, 2009 By Ben Sclair

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA – GOLF Magazine recently released its list of the “Top 100 Golf Courses,” which features Chambers Bay at No. 46 in the U.S. and No. 77 in the World. Chambers Bay was the highest ranked new course to appear on both lists. Owned by Pierce County and managed by Northbrook, Ill.-based KemperSports, Chambers Bay features panoramic views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains and is slated to host both the 2010 U.S. Amateur and 2015 U.S. Open Championships.

The “Top 100” lists were compiled by a team of GOLF Magazine panelists, including major championship winners, Ryder Cup players, architects, amateur champions, photographers, journalists and historians. The list is included in the October 2009 issue of the magazine.

“It has only been two years since Robert Trent Jones, Jr. finished sculpting Chambers Bay from the remains of a gravel mine and yet experts are already calling it one of the best golf courses in the world,” said Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. “This is another tribute to those who had the vision and courage to build and operate something so spectacular that people will come from around the globe to experience it.”

Other Pacific Northwest area courses on the list include KemperSports-managed Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, and Bandon Trails, all part of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort on Oregon’s Southern Coast.
