Experience a new culture. Learn a new language. Meet new friends. Contribute to world understanding and peace. Become an exchange student! Lakewood Rotary is currently accepting applications for a life-changing experience as a Rotary Exchange Student. The age requirement is to be born between 8/16/92 and 8/15/94. The year long program begins in August of 2010, with return in July of 2011.
Lakewood Rotary coordinates the program between other Rotary clubs around the world. An allowance is given to the student monthly. However, the student must pay the bulk of the costs: airfare, insurance, travel to interviews (Victoria, BC), gifts, and miscellaneous. Costs usually run between $5000 and $10,000, depending on other trips, etc. But no car insurance, gas expense, no teenage food bills!
Our current outbound student is Hunter Larsen, in India. Some of his comments: “It is really cool meeting people from all over the world and realizing that even though you’re oceans apart you can still be best friends. After school, we all go to the local corner store and buy whatever we want. Everything is super cheap here. A bag of potato chips is anywhere from 10-20 cents. But I don’t like Masala Ketchup chips too much. Instead they have these bagged mango slushies for 2 cents a piece that are delicious….The dancing here is unlike dance anywhere else. It is completely free and the most energetic dancing I have ever seen. At the end of the dance contest, all the young men get together and dance for maybe 4 hours or until the DJ gets tired and pulls the plug. The dancing is like a combination of mosh pit, tribal dance, disco, salsa and hip-hop, if that makes any sense at all.”
Also available: A one month family-to-family exchange. For instance, the last student went to a family from France for one month this summer, and then the two students returned here for a month. The cost of this program is air travel, for the most part ($2500 or so).
Applications are due by October 1. For more information, see the Rotary District website at www.rye5020.org, and/or call Greg Rediske at 253-307-3494.
