Hideko K. Barnes Hideko was born in Yokohama, Japan on August 25, 1917, and peacefully passed away at her daughter Sachiko Abbott’s Lakewood home on August 23, 2009 at the age of 92. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Master Sergeant John A. Barnes, Hideko is survived by her two daughters, Masako Nakamura and Sachiko Abbot, who were lovingly present, as was Hideko’s granddaughter, Masako Tsujiguchi, with Hideko for the last weeks of her blessed life. She is also proudly survived by her much-loved five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. At Hideko’s request, there will be no funeral service, and donations on her behalf may be made to Franciscan Hospice. Hideko enjoyed her flower garden, fruit trees, and her precious Yorkshire dogs. John “Nellie” Nelson An inspiration to two decades of Pacific Lutheran football players, coaches and fans, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009, at the age of 44. Nelson died at his residence, Avamere Heritage Rehabilitation Center in Tacoma, surrounded by several dozen current PLU football players and coaches. Nelson served in recent years as a PLU football volunteer assistant coach. Nelson was born on Dec. 20, 1964, in Singapore with a disease that locked all of his joints from the neck down. He first became aware of the PLU football program in 1989 while a student at the university. BILL WALSH Our beloved husband and father passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, August 31, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He had fallen ill in the past week and was unable to recover from emergency surgery on Saturday. Bill was born at home in Vinton County, Ohio on November 17, 1939, to Emma and Jerry Walsh. His family settled in Londonderry, Ohio, where he attended and graduated from nearby Southeastern High School, in Richmondale, Ohio in 1957 and immediately went into the Air Force. He had multiple duty stations during his enlistment and eventually arrived at McChord Air Force Base in 1959, where he soon met and married his wife, Joyce. Together, they spent 50 years working and raising their family in Spanaway. During those many years he drove dump truck locally; was a long haul driver and ran sleeper team with his wife for Gordon Trucking. Bill is survived by his wife Joyce, son Rick, and daughter Debbie (Mark) Mead; brother Jim (Ann) Walsh of Londonderry, Ohio, sister Sue (Buzz) Ison of Ray, Ohio, and numerous nieces, nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. There will be no funeral services, at the request of family, and private interment will be at Mt. View Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life will be held at Bill’s daughter’s home on Saturday, September 12th, 1:00 to 6:00 P.M., for all to gather and renew memories and acquaintances. Robert Merwin Leyse ‘Dr. Bob’
After a lengthy illness, Dr. Bob passed peacefully in his sleep, September 2, 2009. He was born in Chicago, October 1, 1928. He lived in St. Louis, MO, where he graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1954. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army, Fort Lewis from 1955-1957. He settled his family in Bellevue and graduated from University of Washington surgical program in 1963. He boarded thoracic surgery. He practiced medicine in Bellevue, WA where he was on staff at Overlake Hospital. He remained active in teaching at UW Medical School until he left private practice and became an officer in the US Navy Medical Reserve, participating in Desert Storm. He retired and moved to Tacoma, where he married Dyann McLeod. Bob was a member of Fircrest Golf Club.
Bob is survived by wife Dyann, three sons Robb of Bellevue, WA, David (Layna) of Burbank, CA, and Scott of Deer Valley, UT. Bob had a great relationship with Dyann’s family; three sons Mike McLeod (Theresa), Bruce McLeod, and John McLeod, as well as four grandchildren Michael, Annie, Kelsey, and Tatum. He was loved and will be missed.
We are very thankful to the staff for the special care Dr. Bob was given at the Weatherly Inn and the care and support Franciscan Hospice provided not only to Bob, but family as well.
A memorial service and reception will be held at a later date.
