On July 28, nine students and nine mentors sat together to watch a Mariners game. For many students this was their first ballgame, and what better place to see it than Safeco Field. Plus, the Mariners won the game with a hit from Ichiro with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Great baseball drama! Mentors enjoyed being with their students, even if it meant missing part of the game to walk around the stadium and take in all the sights and smells. The fun atmosphere took the edge off the scorching heat.
Another highlight was getting filmed by FSN cameras. The kids were amazed that they got on TV. Mentors and students are part of Communities In Schools of Lakewood’s “Champions Mentor Program.” They meet once a week at school to build academic and personal skills…and they become friends in the process. These outings strengthen relationships that will hopefully progress all the way to graduation.Print This Post
