The highest recognition that may be bestowed on an individual by a Lions Club is the Melvin Jones Fellow, and is presented “For dedicated humanitarian services.” For her dedication as a member of the Lakewood First Lions Club in Lakewood, Cheryl Comsia was made a Melvin Jones Fellow at this year’s club installation of officers.
“Giving others a voice, recognizing a need and acting on it are what has drawn me to Lions – our motto “We Serve” has been something I’ve grown up with and I continue to strive to do – make a difference by serving others,” stated Comsia. She has proven she can walk the talk. Presently holding the office of newsletter editor for her club–a position known to frustrate all who have previously held the post due to the difficulty of encouraging timely submissions–she has proven equal to the task. Each edition has been packed and informative, and delivered on schedule. She has perhaps been at least as valuable for reliable attendance at regular meetings, being a constant presence at the club’s fundraising events and club functions and full participation at various committee meetings. Her sense of humor, charm and delightful laugh are a high point at the early morning meetings.
Brought up as an “Air force brat,” as she likes to refer to herself, she was exposed to international cultures through her family’s extensive travels. “I believe it was that experience that made me more aware of the needs of others, she said. She earned her degree at The University of Washington and followed that with work in the fields of early childhood, particularly with Head Start where the belief in making a difference to families in poverty is by empowering the whole family, not just the child, encouraged her to be an advocate for change.” She concluded by stating, “We are not individuals beyond our four walls, we are a part of a larger community and that brings a responsibility – to serve others.”
Outside the club she works for the Tacoma School District, has two sons with her husband Dan, who is also a member of the Lakewood First Lions and has just been elected Vice District Chair for Lions International District 19C.
