Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that political signs are up in masse and much earlier than before. The early primary has something to do with it, but why are there so many other candidate signs up already with more than 100 days before the election in November.
Both Pierce County and Lakewood mandate no political sign posting until 60 days before the election. University Place code says that political signs are “limited to a reasonable time before the election”.
Minds will disagree on what a reasonable time before an election is for the placement of political signs in UP. And even the 60 day limits of Lakewood and Pierce County can be subject to some debate under a freedom of speech argument. But, regardless as it stands now; the 60 day period seems to be the traditional norm for the area.
Why are we breaking further and further from that norm? We as a local community should recognize that temporary political signs along our roads, sidewalks and in our neighborhoods are not things to be left standing for long periods of time. As such we should also recognize that these political signs should be things limited in their duration.
Honestly when weighed against the costs and environmental wastefulness, I can’t really see the great value of today’s political sign anyway; but that is a different debate altogether.
The point is that as a community and as political candidates we should all come to an understanding about what is appropriate, effective and fair when it comes to the posting and duration of temporary political signs within our communities.
For the time being, candidates should constrain rather than stretch out the duration of political sign postings and at least follow the adopted codes of the jurisdictions where they place political signs.
