The Lakewood Area Shelter Association (LASA) a local agency offering emergency prevention services and a housing provider for homeless families is hosting an ice cream social on Tuesday July 28th to mark their twentieth anniversary.
The social will take place from 3-5 PM at Park Lodge Elementary School at the corner of 100th and Gravelly Lake Drive. Guests can choose one of their favorite flavors along of course with toppings. Best of all the ice cream will be scooped by a long list of Celebrity Scoopers. The scoopers include local politicians, columnist Kathleen Merryman, local singer and songwriter Vicci Martinez and more! It is rumored that we will even have Ms. Tahoma drop in and help scoop.
LASA was created when a group of ministers and their parishioners came together and decided to do something about the growing need for services in the southwest part of the county. In an unusual move the churches joined forces, funds and volunteers to create an Outreach program to meet the needs of their neighbors.
Later there was a realization that there was a need for housing as well and the housing programs were born. LASA provides both emergency and transitional housing to homeless families and their children. They also operate one group home for young mothers and their babies.
LASA now provides housing to over 50 families per year in either an emergency, transitional or low income permanent housing. With the economy in a slump there has been an increase in demand for services. Still the agency decided it was time to step back and appreciate all of our supporters and invite them in to help celebrate.
The highlight of the social will be the unveiling of architectural drawings showing the Client Services Center and multi housing units the agency plans to build in the future to help meet growing community needs.Print This Post
