Longtime Lakewood family practice physician Dr. Michael John Kelly has decided to leave his medical practice in Lakewood. He closes his office on Custer Rd. by the end of June.
According to a letter the doctor sent to all his patients, Dr. Kelly opened his local office 20 years ago, moving here from a practice in Oregon. He has been practicing medicine for over 30 years. Although he is closing his private practice, the Lakewood physician said he is not retiring. Instead he has accepted a civilian position on the staff of the McChord AFB Family Practice Clinic.
“This represents an exciting change that fits well into my professional and personal goals at this time of my career,” he wrote in a letter to patients.
Patients of Dr. Kelly hosted a farewell/thank you party at Lakewood’s Carr’s Restaurant on Thursday afternoon. More than a few tears were shed, along with a healthy dose of laughter for the more than 100 attendees.
Dr. Kelly received his medical degree from the University Of Cincinnati’s College Of Medicine and did his training at Oregon Health & Science University.
He has referred patients to Dr. David Kennel and Dr. Kevin Braun, also Lakewood-based primary care physicians.
