Local Red Cross disaster volunteers rushed to the scene of an early morning apartment fire at the Meadow Parks Garden Court Apartments (5416 Hannah Pierce Road West, University Place) on Monday, June 22, 2009. The American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter is responding and working to provide immediate emergency assistance for the families displaced by the blaze. Early estimates indicate 24 residents (18 adults and 6 children) have been affected by the fire which destroyed four units and caused smoke and water damage to four other units. Red Cross disaster relief volunteers are at the scene meeting with clients to help them develop their recovery plans and provide emergency assistance for their disaster-caused needs such as temporary shelter, groceries, clothing, and emotional support.
How You Can Help
One of the best ways to support the work of the American Red Cross and help disaster victims is through a financial donation. It is the fastest and most effective way to assist families affected by a disaster and provides for the most flexible use of resources. Because there is no way of knowing what spontaneous individual donations or unsolicited collections of items will consist of, the Red Cross cannot accept individual donations of items such as food, clothing, or furniture.
