University Place organizations kicked off efforts to build the Playground by the Sound at a design Day Thursday. The activity was capped off with a community celebration and public showing of the preliminary design completed by a Leathers & Associates designer.
The playground, to be built by community volunteers on the north meadow at the Chambers Golf Course, was designed based on the ideas of elementary school students from throughout University Place.
Many area residents recall their participation in building the Playground @ Ft. Steilacoom Park in 2005 and this project will be accomplished in much the same way. During the 5-day build, approximately 1,000 volunteers will be needed to do the work. In the meantime, playground committee members will be raising the $175,000 needed to fund the project.
