The Sixth of June is more than the 65th anniversary of the Normandy Beach D-Day Landing.
It also was graduation day for Steilacoom High School’s Class of 2009.
Senior Awards Night, the most recent activity in a memorable string of senior year end-of-school events was held on June 4 before a crowd of family members and friends.
Sixty-one members of the 2009 Class were honored that evening, with a variety of accolades including individual department recognition and monetary awards. This year’s scholarships totaled approximately $1.3 million.
Besides specific academic scholarships from schools such as Brown University, St. Martin’s University and Waldorf College, 14 community-sponsored awards were presented.
Local donors included Kiwanis of Steilacoom, Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce, Steilacoom Historical Educational Foundation (SHEF) the Monica Lightell Memorial Community Service Scholarship, John Anderson Scholarships, The Lucas Family Scholarships, Gloria Martinson Creger Memorial Scholarship, Evanson Family PLU Scholarships, O’Grady Family Scholarships, and The Bair Family Scholarship.
Other community scholarships included the David Sellars Scholarship, Anna & Fred Zeigler Scholarship, and the Chet Nichols Memorial Scholarship, as well as the Anderson Island Community Scholarship.
Class Salutatorian Jennifer Kim and Valedictorian Emily Boline escorted their classmates to Graduation, held on Saturday afternoon at Olson Auditorium at Pacific Lutheran University.
