After holding a public hearing and considering public testimony on the project, the Steilacoom Historical School District’s Board of Directors, approved at its March 25, 2009 board meeting, a construction plan to significantly improve the high school’s PE and athletic fields, according to Rusty Pritchard, Project Manager for the High School’s renovation and modernization project.
Since that time, said Pritchard, the District, SHS staff, the District’s project management, design consultants and Korsmo Construction, Inc. have teamed together to design and construct the project that is scheduled to begin on June 19, 2009.
The project will replace the natural grass field with a new sports field synthetic turf, revised track/field event locations, and a new underground drainage system beneath the turf field. Other site improvements in the $2.3 million dollar project include re-planking the entire bleacher section with new aluminum seating with back rests, new stairs with handrails and accommodation of up to 12 ADA and companion seats. The upgrade also includes construction of a new two-story announcer and coaches booth, relining the track, and applying a new protective coating on the track surface. It also includes fencing around the baseball field and asphalt walkways and drives to improve access to and maintenance of the complex.
The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the first high school home football game on Sept. 25, 2009. During the summer, the entire sports field and track will be off-limits to the general public while the project is being constructed.
The District has scheduled a separate project to resurface the existing SHS tennis courts. The project will start at the end of August and be completed prior to the start of school in the fall.
