I didn’t realize that we as citizens were limited to the prevention of only one vice in our community. I appreciate that information for we will need to choose well. There are so many. There are the two you cited: drunk driving and gambling. Interestingly enough, both these vices are related to addictive behaviors: alcoholism and gambling additions, and both destroy families and can be deadly. (Yes, even gambling can be deadly. Have you never heard of someone being killed for not paying his gambling debt or killing himself for the mess he has made of his life?) I happen to believe that responsible communities do not promote the exploitation of the weaker among us, even it if brings in tax dollars and jobs, but I digress.
There are more vices from which to choose: prostitution, organized crime, gangs, child molestation, rape, anger (which leads to violence and murder), greed (which leads to extortion and stealing and things like Ponzi schemes), injustice (for example, corruption in our judicial systems), recklessness (I suppose your #1 choice of drunk driving would fit in here), sloth (able-bodied people not carrying their own weight causing a drain on our society), and the list can go on!
I do not like the notion of just focusing on one and having to tolerate the rest, do you? What if we just worked together to eliminate all the vices in our community?
