Firefighters and Police Officers Hoop it Up for Charity

May 26, 2009 By Ben Sclair

Lakewood, Wash. – The 5th annual Helmets vs. Shields charity basketball game is scheduled for Saturday, May 30th at Clover Park High School at 6:00 p.m. Come out and watch the firefighters and police officers battle on the court to raise money for charity. Tickets will be available for purchase beginning on April 20th for $5 each. Children age four and under are free. Pre-sale tickets admit one person and can be redeemed for a free popcorn at the concession stands. Tickets can be purchased at Lakewood Fire Station 20, located at 10928 Pacific Highway, Monday through Friday between 8am and 4pm. All of the proceeds go to the Life Safety Charity Fund and the Lakewood Police Independent Guild Charitable Fund.

The Life Safety Charity Fund is a non-profit organization responsible for overseeing Lakewood Fire District 2’s Community Assistance, Resources, and Education (CARE) program. The CARE Program addresses community needs through grants and/or donations from fire department employees, foundations, charities, citizens, and the Lakewood business community. Examples of the program include; smoke alarms, teddy bears, taxi vouchers, emergency clothes replacement and emergency occupancy restoration.

The Lakewood Police Independent Guild Charitable Fund was established in 2008 by Lakewood Police Officers. Its primary function is to help victims of crime that Officers come in contact with in the performance of their normal duties who are in need of immediate assistance for basic human needs such as food, clothing and housing. These could be child victims, victims of domestic violence, the elderly, or other vulnerable citizens in the community that would otherwise have nowhere else to turn.

A raffle will be held with prizes donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets are available for purchase at the game. A silent auction will also be held for other various prizes, including, but not limited to, Rainiers and Mariners baseball tickets, an Emerald Downs family package, and Sounders FC game tickets.
