LAKEWOOD—Since 1987, the Clover Park School District (CPSD) has honored exemplary employees in three categories, classified, certificated and administrative. Award recipients are chosen by an independent panel of Lakewood citizens.
Recipients for the 2009 CPSD Employee of the Year are:
- Carricia Simpson, Certificated Employee of the Year;
- Sonia Miller, Classified Employee of the Year; and
- Delphie Nielsen, Administrative Employee of the Year.
Certificated Employee of the Year: Carricia Simpson, Fifth Grade Teacher, Tyee Park Elementary School
Carricia displays an infectious passion for education. Her love and concern for children, charismatic personality and dynamic human relationship skills make her a wonderful role model for students and colleagues. She supports parents and students by providing empowering training sessions for parents to assist them with their children’s academic and social needs. Carricia has developed a positive rapport with students and staff, dedicating many hours to meet the unique needs of those she serves. She reminds students daily that, “It’s not where you come from, but where you are going that matters.” Carricia has a heart for children and a mutual respect for the unique diversity they bring to her classroom.
Classified Employee of the Year: Sonia Miller, Head Secretary, Mann Middle School
Sonia is described as the “North Star” of Mann Middle School. She gives students, parents, staff and community a warm welcome and always facilitates their needs. Her disposition is positive and glowing, even during challenging interactions. Sonia may have a line of people waiting for her, but she approaches each person with courtesy and a calm demeanor. A colleague writes, “Sonia sees us as a part of her regular job. We are not viewed as interruptions, we are her ‘people’ and her responsibility and she makes us feel valued and important.” Sonia, and her smile, are loved by students, their parents and especially by Mann staff.
Administrative Employee of the Year: Delphie Nielsen, Director of Transportation, ASC
Delphie is a constant source of inspiration to her staff. Her eagerness to teach and encourage is unparalleled. She performs her duties with commitment and pride and continually leads by example. Delphie’s number one priority is the safety and well-being of students. She is an innovative thinker, good steward of district resources and solution-focused. She strives for perfection in every task she undertakes. Regardless of the stresses of the day, Delphie is always ready to listen and assist. She is the first person in the office in the morning and the last person to leave at night. She is the face of the transportation department.
