I recently received a letter from David Anderson, head of the group Community Matters. In his letter he criticizes the City of Lakewood for operating a bus to take seniors to the casinos.
Last year I supported David Anderson’s petition to get an initiative before the voters so they could make an informed decision on the future of gambling in Lakewood. Without that petition there was no chance the voters could be heard.
Well, the voters spoke at the polls, and soundly defeated the anti-gambling measure. Maybe we want gambling here. Or maybe we want the jobs and tax revenue.
David Anderson did not give up, and is continuing his efforts to rid Lakewood of all casinos. That is his right in this free country.
However, his latest tactic will take away one of our most important freedoms, the freedom to choose. Wake up Lakewood! If people like David Anderson are allowed to control our daily lives, where will it stop? Will he try to make it illegal for fat people to buy Cheetos or eat at McDonalds?
I’m not a casino gambler. Heck, I gamble every day when I step out of bed. But I don’t want David Anderson to take away my right to go to a casino if I so choose. Maybe someday, when I don’t drive anymore, I’ll want to take that bus.
