Off leash dog park approved on Chambers Creek properties

May 6, 2009 By Ben Sclair

Dogs and their two legged friends will have another place to romp in Pierce County under an agreement recently approved by the City of University Place, SUNDogs and Pierce County.

After five years of dogged determination, SUNDogs (Safe, Unleashed and Natural) convinced Pierce County to create an interim off leash dog park in addition to the three permanent off leash areas planned for the future on the Chambers Creek Properties in University Place.

“There is a huge unmet need for off leash dog parks in Pierce County,” said Rod Giffels, chair of the volunteer 501C3 SUNDogs organization. “While the interim space isn’t as large as we wanted, we believe the site (just under one acre) will be a huge draw and will hopefully convince the county to expand the site further in the future.”

The proposed interim site will be located near the Central Meadow area near an existing parking lot and restrooms. Under the agreement, SUNDogs is responsible for raising funds to construct and maintain the fenced park.

SUNDogs is currently raising funds to help pay for fencing materials, installation and other amenities. For membership information or information on tax deductible donations, please visit www.updogpark.org or contact Rod Giffels at 253-722-1418 or Debbie Klosowski at 253-565-8466.
