Civil War Re-enactment at Fort Steilacoom Park

May 5, 2009 By Ben Sclair

After a five year absence, the Historic Fort Steilacoom Association will soon host the 2009 Civil War Re-enactment event at Fort Steilacoom Park. The actual event occurs Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, 2009, with its set-up beginning May 7 and take-down ending May 11th. This event provides opportunities for cultural and educational learning. Period costumes, equipment and supplies allow visitors to ‘travel back in time.’

As part of the event, mock battles will be waged in the open meadows pitting North against South soldiers. Cannons and black-powder are used in these battles and are monitored under very strict guidelines. The battles are held at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, and may impact the Fort Steilacoom Park neighborhood with increased noise levels and blasts.

Please take precautions to protect vulnerable residents and pets and be alert to the time periods of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, 2009, when the actual battles will be waged in the park. If you have questions, please call the City of Lakewood Parks and Recreation Department at 253-589-2489.
