Todd Pehowski, a business marketing education teacher from Lakes High School, is the 2009 Pierce County Chapter Washington Association of Vocational Administrators (WAVA) Educator of the Year. Pehowski was nominated for the award by Debra Shanafelt, director of career and technical education and secondary initiatives.
Before becoming an educator, Pehowski spent more than 12 years working in the business industry in a variety of positions.
“I did it all, from cold calling sales to marketing and finance,” said Pehowski. “My work and life experiences integrate with my teaching, which make it more authentic for my students.”
Pehowski has been a teacher for six years–five at Lakes. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech and a Career/Technical Education certificate from Central Washington University. Pehowski completed his student teaching at Capital High School in Olympia before coming to Lakes, where he teaches first and second year marketing and runs the student store.
“Lakes High School has great students,” said Pehowski. “They are diverse, respectful, motivated and excited about their opportunities. I think they appreciate the professional and real world approach I strive to bring to the program.”
Pehowski is the head of Lakes’ business marketing department, head of the school’s business and marketing Pathway, curriculum manager, a member of the Washington Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Executive Committee Board and president elect of the Washington Association of Marketing Educators. He is completing work on his National Board Teacher Certification this school year and is also a new father.
“I am fortunate to work with a great team of educators at Lakes,” said Pehowski. “We all work very hard and appreciate the support we receive from our school and district administrators.”
Pehowski and Lakes senior Jane Lee, a 2009 Washington Award for Vocational Excellence winner, will be honored along with other Pierce County WAVE Award winners, students and teachers, at a May 20 dinner and award ceremony at Bates Technical College.
