Thanks, SHSD volunteers! We appreciate all you do!

By Patti Field, SHSD Volunteer Coordinator

Steilacoom Historical School District No. 1 is no stranger to volunteering. Its many volunteers have been involved in school district history since the start, approximately 150+ years ago.

During the past 20 years, however, SHSD’s Volunteer Program has been organized in order to have Washington State Patrol criminal background checks completed on every volunteer, document service hours, keep track of building affiliation and publicly recognized and acknowledge all volunteers.

The district observes the National Volunteer Recognition Week, every April, with events held in every building.

SHSD’s volunteers are absolutely amazing, and they deserve every accolade and more that can be bestowed upon them. Up through March 2009, these volunteers have contributed more than 16,000 hours of service. There are, however, countless hours spent on after-school and weekend functions that go unrecorded. There also are many hours spent in homes where volunteers correct spelling tests, make phone calls or hold planning sessions for PTA meetings.

Keeping track of these donated hours is important since grant money is available that is turned back to our schools, based partly on the number of volunteer hours contributed.

Volunteer hours are numerous and varied. Examples include a one-on-one tutor, such as PLU student Shin Sakurai, who works with math students. It’s people such as Peggy Wanner, who still schedules ticket takers for SHS sporting events, even though her son graduated years ago. Then there’s Mike Culley, who built and painted backdrops for Chloe Clark’s Spooktacular. It’s Richard Dell, who was first to offer assistance to Pioneer’s new music teacher when an accompanist was needed.

These are just a few of the many outstanding people in our district, with enormous hearts and lots of generosity, giving to our students and serving the staff and schools.

We are extremely fortunate and sincerely grateful for all of them. Thank you!

The volunteers in Steilacoom Historical School District are absolutely amazing, and they deserve recognition. Through March 2009, they have given more than 16,000 service hours of service, not counting countless unreported hours for after-school and weekend functions. Our volunteers also contribute by making phone calls, holding planning sessions for the PTAs or making goodies for Staff Appreciation events.

“Thank You” to all who have helped this year. There are many people listed here. Names may be unintentionally omitted, and apologies are in order for that, but this list should include everyone who volunteere–even once.
